This is a follow-up to my original article posted here – if you have not read it, I humbly suggest it.
In addition to not broadcasting certain activities on social media — especially Meta, we have to be hyper vigilant about what we do share.
The below photo has been making the rounds depicting a “Latinos For Trump” t-shirt on who we are made to assume is a Latino man being led away by ICE Officers, but a 5 minute search told me that this is not the case at all. This is a doctored photo. The original is in the article from 2018 and depicts an unknown man being led away by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security—despicable, but not face-eating leopard level.
Not only is this irresponsible, it is also highly racist. It is hateful. It smacks of “We told you so!”, or “Why would you vote against your own interests?!” Full stop, everyone who cast a vote has voted against their own interests, the problem is that they were led to believe differently. I’m not saying to sympathize, I am saying to recognize. And to doctor a photo to mean something completely different is repugnant.
What would have had more of an impact would be to see a white undocumented immigrant (there are LOADS to choose from!). But, you won’t see that.
What is my point? Take nothing at face value. Vet EVERYTHING. If you don’t know where to look, how to look, or where to start — ask. Use the reverse image search on Google, even though they’re kowtowing to the Gulf of Mexico debacle — they’re still a search engine that is largely algorithmic.
Stop sharing items until you have confirmed their credibility. When you don’t, you are feeding the monster.
